Students are encouraged to start shadowing in a career field of interest their sophomore or junior year. They can set this up on their own outside of school, or talk with a counselor about opportunities through the school. Any opportunities that we are aware of will be shared with the students via email/announcements.

Calling all Teens - Applications Available for Summa's Teen Volunteer Program
Applications are now being accepted for Summa's Teen Volunteer Program. Summa Health System's Teen Leadership, Education, and Development (LEAD) Volunteer Program focuses on providing each teen volunteer with valuable skills development, leadership opportunities and a positive service experience.

In addition to a regular volunteer assignment, Teen LEAD Volunteers are required to participate in leadership curriculum in the form of coursework, projects or special programs.

This opportunity is available for high school students, aged 14-19 years of age. The program has two 10 week session options, Summer (June-August) and Fall (September-November). Some teens prefer to participate in one session, while others participate in both sessions.

Teens who successfully complete their volunteerism and the leadership curriculum receive a professional portfolio at the end of the year recognition event that includes: certificates of participation, volunteer service hours, a copy of their volunteer service description, among other items. This portfolio may be used for future job or college interviews.

Every year local organizations/companies organize a shadowing experience for interested students. Timken has a program called "Engineer for a Day" and students are matched to area businesses according to the student's engineering discipline choice. A typical visit to a host company might include an overview of the company's business and products, a facility tour, and a chance to spend a few hours one-on-one with an engineer so the students can experience the daily projects and problems that engineers work on and solve.

*This opportunity is offered in February, and students must sign up by the first week of January. Announcements will be made in December. Click here to see a video about the "Engineer for a Day" program:
