STVM Class of 2010 Leaves a Proud Legacy

When the St. Vincent-St. Mary High School (STVM) Class of 2010 graduates on June 5 at E.J. Thomas Hall they have every reason to be proud. The 147 members of the STVM Class of 2010 received a highly impressive $8.8 Million in scholarship and grant offers with over 14% of the students receiving full scholarships.

From the Class of 2010, 99% of the students will attend college and 94% were accepted at their first choice college. Aside from successfully completing four years of the challenging college preparatory curriculum, sitting A.P. Exams, and taking finals, the STVM Class of 2010 also found time in May to put the finishing touches on their class gift. The senior class gift is a long standing tradition at STVM according to Joanne Zaratsian, Director of Major Gifts. In addition to an engraved brick in the Walk of Champions at the new Cosgrove Center which was dedicated at the beginning of their senior year, the STVM Class of 2010 has even bigger plans for a lasting gift to their alma mater and future students. The STVM Class of 2010 has established a scholarship fund to benefit future students at STVM.

The members of this class are well aware that tuition is always increasing and that many members of their class were able to attend STVM through the generosity of scholarship donors. As class representatives, Natasha Kanakkanatt and Michael Ringer noted, “We wanted to establish a permanent legacy at STVM by giving back and showing our gratitude to those who went before us!”

Robert O. V39 and Annamae V39 Orr Memorial Scholarship Established

In February 2010, Karen Murray, STVM Past Parent and Executive Director of the Robert O. and Annamae Orr Family Foundation, approached STVM about establishing a scholarship in honor and memory of Bob and Annamae (Gifford) Orr, alumni from the St. Vincent High School Class of 1939. The Orr Family Foundation has long provided monetary support to organizations that advance the quality of life in Summit and Stark counties. Through this new scholarship the foundation was excited to honor the legacy of Bob and Annamae Orr as alumni while helping to defray the cost of tuition for current STVM students. Six inaugural scholarships were award in early May for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Annual Event Honors Donors and Student Recipients

2010 Family and Memorial Scholarship Reception

On May 10, 2010 the Annual Family & Memorial Scholarship Reception was held at STVM. The evening dinner reception which featured a presentation by the STVM Show Choir was attended by 350 guests including donors, scholarship recipients, and their families. Through this event the donors had the opportunity to meet their recipients and the students had a personal opportunity to thank the donors. Both now and in the future our students have the opportunity to further share in this legacy through scholarship donations. Out of gratitude to the scholarship donors, the student recipients and their parents made honor and memorial donations to the STVM Endowment General Trust totaling $1,387.92. It was a memorable evening for the scholarship benefactors and the students.

Following brief remarks by Endowment Board Member Susie Gaebel Wallace VM91, Joanne Zaratsian, Director of Major Gifts, expressed her gratitude to the scholarship donors and challenged the students to remember what these donors have done to impact their lives and consider giving back to STVM in the future through a scholarship themselves. Joanne also announced the exciting news that the STVM Class of 2010 will honor their alma mater through the establishment of a scholarship. Our community is blessed to have such a strong tradition!
